Two good ones and more at the OCMA

It is not too late to catch two outstanding shows at the Orange County Museum of Art. Both are on until May 24.
Fred Tomaselli has an interesting series of uber-paintings covering pages torn from the New York Times. They are very engaging and play on a lively mixture of pattern, color and text to get their point across.

There also is an exhibit called Alien She which has a tremendous amount of material about the  feminist Riot Grrl movement.  Lots of reading material, zines, photographs, videos and larger works by artists Ginger Brooks Takahashi, Tammy Rae Carland, Miranda July, Faythe Levine, Allyson Mitchell, L.J. Roberts, and Stephanie Syjuco.

And don't forget: A room with recent acquisitions by the museum including this enchanting kinetic sculpture Handbag, by Jim Lambie from 1999.

This small museum always has some interesting work on exhibit often working against the stereotype of the neighborhood.

Women at War

The exhibit showcases the diverse ideas of this talented group of artists from FIG.

The exhibit will be up through April 23 at Hyde Gallery, Grossmont College

Another opening, another show - Hyde Gallery, Grossmont College

"Women at War" is a group show that is opening up soon at the Hyde Gallery at Grossmont College.
This is a provocative exhibit with artists interpreting this theme in different ways.  Just seeing the various takes, personal and political, that carries these artists away is interesting.  
The opening reception is 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7.
And guess what - there is free parking then!

This is my painting, Memory,  that is one of the offerings at the show.

Beyond the Landscape

The Beyond the Landscape group show at the Encinitas Community Center Gallery has closed, but here are some scenes from the exhibit.  For even more pictures check out the  FIG blog.

This was as chance for the artists to consider alternatives to traditional images of the landscape. These works go different places than the usual views of the (glorious though it is) ocean, fabulous sunsets and verdant fields that surround us Southern California.

Fence/ La Barda Exhibit

Pop over to see the Fence/La Barda Installation at the Art Produce Gallery (http://www.artproduce.org). This is a collaboration with San Diego FIG artists and artists from Tijuana's Distrito Diez Gallery. Panel discussion this Thursday at 6PM ; definitely worth a visit to North Park.

               This is a sculpture by Gabriela Escarcega, Mujer de fuego, that is in the exhibit.  Yes, it is covered with matches.  Other works in the show by this bi-national group reference challenges inherent in thinking about political borders.

Painters and Violins

                        The Dream, attributed to Edma Saulnier Trimolet, 1827

Discovered this lovely painting of a pensive violinist at the Museum of Fine Arts, Dijon France. Trimolet is another female painter that was new to me on this trip.

Outside/Inside continues at SB City Hall

This graceful building is the Solana Beach City Hall shown from the parking lot to the North and West. The side of the building sits on the old 101 highway and has a narrow profile.  It's nice curvy front is inviting and stylish.  This is to say that I am enjoying my chance to exhibit there.  My show continues till March 31.
The public reception is March 20, Thursday, from 5:30-7:30 pm.
