Dream walking show at the Women's Museum of California

The exhibit Night Stand will be showing at the Women's Museum of California from November 3-27, 2016     This is a very inventive show by members of the FIG group.  Each artist has let her imagination run riot to reconfigure a bedside night stand reflecting dreams and fears that creep up on us.  It is a fascinating show and I am happy to have a sculpture included. The FIG group blog has some great pictures and commentary on the work on exhibit.  http://fig-art.blogspot.com/

Time marching on - welcome to 2016

I am excited to be participating in a 4 person show at the Bonita Museum in lovely Bonita, CA.
The show is called Here and Now: 4 Abstract Painters. The other artists are Danielle Nelisse, Sherry Krulle-Beaton and Layla Wu. Each has a different take on what contemporary abstraction in painting today.   We will open on June 1, 2016 and the show will be up until July 9.
The reception is on Friday, June 3, 5:30-7:00.  I will be giving a lecture on June 11.

(Con) text opening on Saturday

I am enjoying participating in some group shows this year.  I will be showing this Braille based painting, "Awe Some" at the San Diego Art Institute as it presents “(Con)text: Rethinking Language in Art” on July 25, 2015 at 6 pm in Balboa Park. It is a special treat to be in the re-vitalized SDAI.

(CON)TEXT: RETHINKING LANGUAGE IN ART

"(CON)TEXT: RETHINKING LANGUAGE IN ART" OPENS AT SAN DIEGO ART INSTITUTE JULY 25 The San Diego Art Institute (SDAI) is pleased to present "(Con)text: Rethinking Language in Art" on July 25 at 6pm in Balboa Park. This exhibition invited artists of all media in Southern California/Baja Norte to submit work incorporating text, language, coding, spoken word, literature, books, and other aesthetic materials into their work. The exhibition includes a special sound component by Suzanne Thorpe, an installation by SDAI's artist-in-residence Nina Preisendorfer, and performances by Arzu Ozkal and Perry Vasquez. In tandem with this exhibition will be a youth art component by students from San Miguel Elementary in Lemon Grove, created through SDAI's in-school teaching artist program, a solo exhibition by Judith Parenio, as well as the unveiling of a large-scale installation by renowned artist Raul Guerrero. Two good ones and more at the OCMA

It is not too late to catch two outstanding shows at the Orange County Museum of Art. Both are on until May 24.
Fred Tomaselli has an interesting series of uber-paintings covering pages torn from the New York Times. They are very engaging and play on a lively mixture of pattern, color and text to get their point across.

There also is an exhibit called Alien She which has a tremendous amount of material about the  feminist Riot Grrl movement.  Lots of reading material, zines, photographs, videos and larger works by artists Ginger Brooks Takahashi, Tammy Rae Carland, Miranda July, Faythe Levine, Allyson Mitchell, L.J. Roberts, and Stephanie Syjuco.

And don't forget: A room with recent acquisitions by the museum including this enchanting kinetic sculpture Handbag, by Jim Lambie from 1999.

This small museum always has some interesting work on exhibit often working against the stereotype of the neighborhood.

Women at War

The exhibit showcases the diverse ideas of this talented group of artists from FIG.

Beyond the Landscape

The Beyond the Landscape group show at the Encinitas Community Center Gallery has closed, but here are some scenes from the exhibit.  For even more pictures check out the  FIG blog.

This was as chance for the artists to consider alternatives to traditional images of the landscape. These works go different places than the usual views of the (glorious though it is) ocean, fabulous sunsets and verdant fields that surround us Southern California.

Fence/ La Barda Exhibit

Pop over to see the Fence/La Barda Installation at the Art Produce Gallery (http://www.artproduce.org). This is a collaboration with San Diego FIG artists and artists from Tijuana's Distrito Diez Gallery. Panel discussion this Thursday at 6PM ; definitely worth a visit to North Park.

               This is a sculpture by Gabriela Escarcega, Mujer de fuego, that is in the exhibit.  Yes, it is covered with matches.  Other works in the show by this bi-national group reference challenges inherent in thinking about political borders.

LA Art Fair at the Convention Center

I spent Friday looking at art.  It wasn't crowded and it was a lovely time wandering around looking at the ideas represented by different galleries.  There were many galleries from South Korea and China - so a good chance to see how their take on art differs from the work seen around here (US of A).  

This piece by Davidson really stood out in its simplicity and impact.

Upcoming Show in Solana Beach

I will be showing this and other works in a solo show, Outside/Inside at the Solana Beach City Hall Gallery.  The show runs from February 16, 2014 to March 31.  There will be a reception  for the show on March 20, 5:30-7:30 PM.

Being organized

How I envy this neat and tidy workshop. This is from a visit to the Museum of Flight - Restoration Center.
This Center is affiliated with the Seattle area Museum of Flight. In the Everett Center volunteers restore old airplanes. It was fascinating watching them work on these old and beloved airplanes.  We were especially drawn to an example of the first jet used for commercial travel that was being restored.  Loving hands were evident.

Joyce Pensato's work is being shown in a very strong solo show at the Santa Monica Museum of Art.
The museum space conveys an expansive yet somehow intimate look at this artist's work.  Taking her lead from pop cartoon icons such as Mickey, Bart and Kenny, she riffs on their connection to contemporary culture through the use of drips, dabs, and shiny black paint.
These are gigantic portraits transforming the comic figures to threatening characters that somehow retain their charm.  Prepare to be taken in a wide and yet suffocating embrace by these images.  The show, titled I KILLED KENNY is on until August 17.

Gift and re-gift

I am participating in the FIG show "Gift" that is now on view at Mesa College.  On April 3 we had a wallk through of the exhibit with presentations by the artists.  Each artist interpreted the idea of of the show differently which led to discussions on varied topics including the concept of the gift economy, the artist as gift-giver, the gift of attention, art as transformation, parenthood, nurturing, memory and gun violence.  Even with this wide range of different takes on the subject, the show was beautifully put together with all the voices playing together to make a compelling show.

Moya Devine talked about  her collage images and gift of information about issues surrounding gun violence.

Patterns, Symbols, Codes

This is a picture from the reception on January 13, 2013 at the American Jewish University in Los Angeles.
The three artists participating were myself,  Edith Hillinger and Bruce Barton.

Edith and I gave short talks about our history and the work that was chosen for the exhibit. Unfortunately Bruce could not be there.

The show will be on exhibit until May 13.

Seeing and Doing

My paintings based on messages in Braille are going to be used as models for student projects at the Dove library. There will be over 1000 students going through the exhibit at the Cannon Gallery and then having fun discovering drawing on Mylar.
